Primer questions

Before choosing care, ask these first

A polished page can hide basic gaps. These questions turn the important parts into things you can check.

Name behind the Illinois licence

Get a name before giving health details

  • What is the provider’s full name, and are they a doctor, a nurse practitioner, or something else?
  • Do they hold an Illinois licence to treat you while you are in Illinois?
  • Who reads your health form and first answers, and who asks you follow-up questions?
  • Who will handle later concerns?

Check the medicine

Ask for exact words, not a category

  • What is the ingredient name? That is the medicine’s own name, such as semaglutide, not a brand. Keep it in writing.
  • Is this exact product FDA-approved? If not, ask what category it is in.
  • If it is compounded (mixed to order by a pharmacy), why that instead of a ready-made medicine?
  • What about my health, such as a blood-test result or another medicine I take, would change the plan?
Check the pharmacy

Name the place that will prepare and send it

The Illinois licence search covers doctors, physician assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and pharmacies. The state says its individual licence records are updated daily.

Illinois also publishes physician profiles. A doctor’s profile can show whether they are board certified (passed extra exams in a specialty), any discipline from the state, and any malpractice payments in the most recent ten years. If the doctor has not checked their own profile, it is marked “unverified”.

After you pay

Know what happens after payment

  • How will I get copies of my visit notes and test results?
  • How does routine follow-up work?
  • How are urgent concerns handled?
  • What can be cancelled, and when?
